Activities
The network has two main goals for its first year: to operationalise a mailing list for information sharing amongst members, and to start organising virtual events.

Mailing list
Since the summer, the network has a mailing list (JISCMail) in operation which is used to disseminate information about publications, events, activities, and calls related to empirical legal studies in Intellectual Property.

Inaugral virtual event
The Network for Empirical Legal Studies in Intellectual Property (NELSIP) will be hosting its inaugural event on Friday 10 November 2023, featuring Professor Estelle Derclaye's recently published edited collection, Research Handbook on Empirical Studies in Intellectual Property Law (Edward Elgar, 2023).

The handbook explores empirical legal studies of intellectual property law and covers the four main IP rights, patent, trademark, design and copyright, as well as trade secrets. The chapters in the collection provide cutting-edge empirical data and projections on legislation and case law, using quantitative and qualitative methods, including surveys, interviews, descriptive and inferential statistics.

This inaugural event will be online and have an "Author Meets Readers" format, featuring Professor Derclaye, as well as authors of three chapters from the collection covering trademarks (Professor Ilanah Fhima, An empirical study of the basis of refusal of EU trade marks for 3D marks), patents (Professor Esther van Zimmeren, Legal empirical studies of patenting and patent licensing practices), and designs (Professor Mark P. McKenna and Professor Jessica Silbey, A qualitative method for investigating design).
Professor William Gallagher will serve as discussant and there will be time for audience questions and discussion.

It is anticipated that the event will result in a review of the collection in ‘The IP Law Book Review’, an international online review of scholarly books.

Full details of the event can be found here.
